Before You Visit a Church: Check Its Beliefs

Where to Find and Evaluate a Church’s Core Beliefs

Before visiting a church, explore what it believes. Its website should help you understand the teaching that will shape your faith, worship, and spiritual growth.

Start with “What We Believe.” or “Our Beliefs”. Look under “About,” “Doctrine,” or “Statement of Faith.” These pages should explain more than the church’s mission or welcoming atmosphere. Look for clear convictions about Scripture’s authority, the Trinity, Christ’s full deity and humanity, human sin, and salvation by grace alone through faith alone in Christ.

Look beyond familiar phrases. “We love Jesus” and “We preach the gospel” need explanation. Does the church describe Christ’s atoning death and bodily resurrection, our need for repentance and faith, and the believer’s growth in holiness? Clear language helps you understand what these commitments mean.

A church’s beliefs should be clear enough to understand—and public enough to examine.

Find the fuller explanation. A short summary may link to a historic confession or membership materials. Ask which confession the church adopts and whether it takes exceptions. Brevity alone does not establish shallowness; persistent unwillingness to clarify deserves closer attention.

Compare its beliefs with its sermons. Listen to several complete messages. Does the pastor explain passages in context, including difficult truths? Verse-by-verse preaching should follow Scripture’s meaning, not merely its order. Examine what you hear as the Bereans did (Acts 17:11).

Ask who oversees the teaching. Identify the pastors or elders and how doctrinal concerns are addressed.

Use the website to prepare informed questions. Then visit and observe whether clear convictions are reflected in faithful preaching, humble leadership, and loving care.
